Hello, I’m Penelope, mother of five and maker of every piece in this shop.
I started sewing at secondary school, making clothes for myself and discovering the joy of wearing something nobody else had. Years later, with five children of my own, that passion turned to making clothes that could keep up with them. Four years ago I started sharing those designs with other families, and Penelope Jane was born.
Everything is designed, cut, embroidered and sewn by me in my Nottingham studio. There are no factories and no middlemen, just me and my sewing machine.
Why choose Penelope Jane?
Truly limited edition. I make everything from roll-end fabric that would otherwise have gone to landfill, in small numbers. Some pieces are one of a kind, others are a small run. When the fabric’s gone, that combination is gone for good. A pattern may return one day, but always in a different fabric with different embroidery.
Patterns proven by real children. Every cut has been refined over years of wear by my own five, from toddlers to teenagers, and my nieces still test each new design. Many of my designs have adjustable straps, turn-up cuffs, extra buttons and generous hems, so they can last longer.
Colours chosen to go together. I take my embroidery colours from the contrast fabric, so every piece is a considered combination, not a mix and match.
Made to be given. Every order arrives in a keepsake box with tissue paper, ready to give. Perfect for new babies, birthdays, christenings and Christmas.
Named after people I love. Every design carries the name of someone in my family: my children, my nieces, my sister, my cousin, my parents, my grandparents and my late mother-in-law. Each one is made with that much care.
