From School Sewing Lessons to Our Nottingham Front Room — The Story Behind Penelope Jane
My love of sewing didn't start in a fancy workroom or with a business plan. It started in secondary school, with a pile of fabric, a borrowed sewing machine, and a determination to wear something nobody else had.
I spent those early years experimenting — trying different fabrics, unpicking seams, starting again, getting better. There's something quietly magical about turning a flat piece of cloth into something you can actually wear. I was hooked from the start.
Years passed, life happened, and I became a mother of five. Suddenly my sewing wasn't just for me anymore. I was making clothes for little people who were hard on their hems, rough on their knees, and deeply opinionated about what they'd actually agree to wear. My patterns got sharper. My construction got stronger. And slowly, something interesting happened — I had a collection of designs that actually worked. Tested in the real world, on real children, through real adventures.
Four years ago, I decided to share them. Penelope Jane was born in our converted front room in Nottingham, and every piece I've made since has carried that same spirit — practical, beautiful, made to last.
